HOW TO STYLE YOUR FACE MASKS

Hi darling!

I know you’re probably tired of hearing about COVID-19, believe me, so am I, but the thing is that this whole situation has given us this very particular accessory that seems it will stay with us for a little longer, so why not make the best of it?

I try to find the silver lining of every situation and one of the good things about wearing a mask (besides protecting yourself and others, of course) is that if you don’t feel like putting makeup on you just add a pair of sunglasses and problem solved!

Now, all jokes aside, I think that before we talk about how to style a face mask it’s important to learn the different types of masks, how they work and how to wear them so here we go!

WHICH MASK DO I NEED ACCORDING TO MY SITUATION?

There are different types of mask, and depending on the situation you should be wearing one or the other:

  1. Hygienic masks

If you don’t have any symptoms and you’re sure you’re not positive, these are the way to go. There are also different types within this kind of mask: reusable and non-reusable.

Non-reusable ones should be disposed of after recommended use. If they are reusable, the manufacturer will indicate the maximum number of washes.

  1. Surgical masks

If you have any symptoms or you’ve been in contact with someone who has tested positive you should choose surgical masks as a priority.

The duration of these masks depends on the manufacturer but you should always change it if you notice that it gets wet or dirty. For comfort and hygiene reasons, it is usually recommended not to wear the mask for more than 4 hours.

  1. PPE masks

Those who care for or are in contact with people who are symptomatic or positive for COVID-19 will preferably use PPE masks.

The duration depends on the manufacturer. Just as the last ones, the duration of these masks depends on the manufacturer but you should always change it if you notice that it gets wet or dirty. For comfort and hygiene reasons, it is usually recommended not to wear the mask for more than 4 hours.

HOW DO I STYLE MY FACE MASK?

Now, off to the fun part! As you saw, there are different types of masks, and they come in a variety of colors. When it comes to surgical and PPE masks there is a limited amount of colors, they usually come in white, black and blue.

On the other side, Hygenic masks come in all kinds of colors, materials and patterns.

Whenever I go out I make sure that my mask also looks good with the rest of the outfit, I mostly wear black or white facemasks since they’re easier to match but why not have a little fun with them?

My secret for making everything look put together when I wear patterns is to choose colors of the pattern for the rest of the outfit, for example here, I would use either black, red, yellow, or black items to make the look cohesive.

The mask can also be the star of the show and you can build a very basic outfit and let the pattern of the mask shine.

Another option is matching the material of the mask with your outfit, as you can see here. Nowadays you can find masks made with sequins, silk and other interesting fabrics, just make sure they have a filter.

TIPS FOR WEARING A MASK

  1. WEAR A MASK LINER

I get really annoyed when I put my mask on and my makeup ends all over it so I started using mask liners, you can get the of off Amazon

2. ALWAYS WASH YOUR FACE AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME

Facemasks have brought a very uncomfortable issue and that’s maskcne. If you wear your mask for extended periods it tends to get dirty, which can be very bad for your skin since they’re in contact with our faces constantly. To avoid your pores suffering from this, one of the best things you can do is wash your face as soon as you get home and following a skincare routine. Also, keep in mind that reusable masks need to be washed frequently.

3. BUY YOUR MASKS IN BULK TO SAVE MONEY

If you wear disposable masks the best option is to buy them in bulk, that way you don’t have to be constantly buying them and you save money as well. You can find them on Amazon

4. TRY DIY MASKS

So this is a great sustainable option for facemasks, I know you probably have seen that a lot of these disposable masks end up in the ocean, so a great way to avoid this is by using some fabric you may have at home to make your own mask. Here’s a tutorial on how to do it.
