So as you may already know if you follow me on Instagram I’ve been educating myself on sustainability since I’m becoming more aware of the effects that fast fashion has on the world and I wanted to share with you guys some of the things I’ve learned so far.
THINKING BEFORE BUYING
One of the first things I’m starting to implement in my day to day life is thinking before buying. I feel like sometimes it’s easy to be influenced by all the ads that we see online or the random sales on our favorite stores but the thing is that most of the times we don’t stop to think if we really need to be buying that certain item that we have on our shopping cart. Whenever I feel the impulse of buying something I stop and ask myself these 3 questions:
Do I really need it?
Do I already have something similar?
How will I style it with the pieces I already own?
If I can’t respond to those questions with a valid answer then I put it back or empty my shopping cart.
ALTERING YOUR CLOTHES
I’m not much of a DIY person when it comes to clothes but this is an option if you’re into sewing and having original pieces. Once you’ve already used an item way too many times or you got bored of it think about how you can alter it, I’m sure you can find thousands of tutorials online on how to give it a second life.
TAKING CARE OF WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN
This may be one of the most important things I’ve learned. I used to completely ignore the washing instructions on the tags of my clothes and then I would wonder why they didn’t look the same anymore. If you don’t take care of your clothes you’ll find yourself having to replace them more often than you should.
CONSIDER A CAPSULE WARDROBE
I know, a capsule wardrobe sounds like a big commitment, but it can be a great option if you find yourself standing in front of your closet in the morning not knowing what to wear. The secret is investing in good quality pieces that last longer. If you’re interested in knowing a little bit more you can check out my post where I give you my take on capsule wardrobes.
STYLE THE SAME PIECE MULTIPLE WAYS
Sometimes you may feel like you don’t have enough clothes and sometimes what actually happens is that you get bored of wearing things the exact same way you always do. For this tip I invite you to think outside the box and experiment with pieces, you can pair them with things you’ve thought of before or you can check out some of my tips on how to style items multiple ways:
Last but not least, one of the best things you can do is buy second hand since you’re giving that piece a second life. There is a huge variety when it comes to vintage stores, my favorite one is What Goes Around Comes Around.
Just remember that it takes time and it can seem overwhelming at first but the important thing is that you start somewhere. Even if you can only implement one of these tips, you will still be on the path to a more sustainable life.
